ABOUT ME
An Interview with Ben C. Lawes
What inspired you to write 'Three Minutes'?
“I love Jesus, love writing and I love my family. I have what I would like to think is a 'healthy interest' in football. I tried to combine all of these aspects of my life into a story which began as an english essay back in High School!”
What do you love most about writing?
“Having a story to tell and believing that the world will benefit from that story. Also, completing the last sentence of the last paragraph of the last chapter. That is so satisfying.”
Why should people read 'Three Minutes'?
“Football fans will enjoy it but that is not the sole purpose. Whether you are a football fan or not I think anyone can connect with Jordan Westward's empowering story. It's about hope. No matter what kind of background you have had there is always hope.”
Who was your favourite character to write?
“Jordan's wife, Abigail. That has been so much fun and I couldn't have done it without my wonderful wife's insight. I so enjoyed creating Abigail's character; she speaks her mind and is yet a very submissive and supporting wife that adds an enchanting, kind of humorous sparkle to the storyline.”
What advice would you give an aspiring author?
“Just write. Go back over the writing. Rewrite it until you are as happy as you'll ever be with it. It will never be perfect. Build situations. Write what you are passionate about, not what you know about. Don't be afraid of other people's input. Don't try to be someone else. Be yourself.”
What's the secret to becoming a great author?
“I guess you would need to ask a great author about that! Seriously, make the characters believable. Let the reader know that you really enjoy what you are writing. Describe what you see and don't forget the hook at the end of each chapter!”
What is the best part about reading a book?
“To me it's never wanting to put a book down, even when it's 1am! I like seeing character progression, that's one of the things I love, and how an author can describe a variety of locations from a personal perspective.”
Who is your favourite author?
“To be honest growing up I couldn't read enough. I would resort to the back of a cornflake box! Seriously as a kid I loved Jules Verne. Since then I've enjoyed Gary Paulsen, I liked the Left Behind series, the fantasy author Stephen Donaldson and many others...”
Is Ben C. Lawes your real name?
"Haha! That's classified information! Seriously, no it's not my real name. It came from Ben Lawers, a mountain in the Highlands of Scotland."
Will there be more of your work to look forward to in the future?
“I've been greatly surprised as I thought I only had enough material for one book. Incredibly this has turned potentially into a series of four. 'Three More Minutes' is planned to be released in Summer 2019.”
